Three Choirs Festival Case Study
Multi-Camera Classical Music Production Inside One of Britain's Most Historic Festivals
For the past five years, Bubble Production has been proud to provide the live event production, multi-camera filming and big screen relay for the Three Choirs Festival—the world’s oldest classical music festival, now in its 298th year. Held in rotation between the cathedrals of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester, the festival presents a unique technical challenge, combining large-scale orchestral performances with the architectural constraints of historic buildings.
Our role is simple in principle but demanding in practice: ensure that every audience member enjoys an exceptional view of the performance while preserving the atmosphere and visual beauty of the cathedral.
The Challenge
Unlike a modern concert hall, a cathedral offers limited camera positions, restricted sightlines and very little room for production equipment.
At the same time, the audience expects to feel immersed in the performance without being distracted by cameras or crew.
Every production must therefore balance three competing priorities:
- preserving the visual integrity of the venue
- capturing every musical nuance
- delivering zero-delay images to audience screens throughout the cathedral
Because many seats have restricted views, the video relay becomes an essential part of the audience experience rather than simply an enhancement.

Our Solution
Bubble Production delivers the complete live vision system using our OB2 outside broadcast unit and a highly experienced four-person production team comprising:
- Music Director
- Vision Director
- Vision Engineer
- Camera Operator
Although the crew is deliberately compact, every role is highly specialised, allowing us to deliver broadcast-quality results efficiently throughout the festival.
Broadcast Coverage Designed for Classical Music
Capturing an orchestra requires a very different approach from filming sport or conferences.
Our camera system includes:
- four remotely operated PTZ cameras
- one 100x long-lens broadcast camera positioned at the rear of the cathedral
- six discreet orchestra-level micro cameras placed among the musicians
This combination allows us to produce everything from sweeping architectural shots to intimate close-ups of soloists, instrumental sections and the conductor—all while keeping the stage free from unnecessary equipment.
Musical Direction Makes the Difference
One of the aspects that sets Bubble Production apart is our use of a dedicated Music Director.
Before the festival begins, every musical score is carefully marked to indicate camera changes, solo entries, instrumental passages and key moments within each performance.
Working alongside the Vision Director, this preparation allows camera cuts to follow the music naturally rather than simply reacting to it.
The result is coverage that feels musical, unobtrusive and engaging for both the live audience and any recorded content.
Zero-Delay Live Relay
The finished programme is distributed live to 30 large screens positioned throughout the cathedral, ensuring every audience member enjoys a clear view of the performance regardless of where they are seated.
We also provide dedicated vision feeds to conductor monitors positioned where parts of the orchestra or choir have restricted sightlines.
Because these feeds are delivered with effectively zero perceptible delay, performers can continue to play confidently while maintaining visual contact with the conductor.
